Modern banknotes often include some elements that are only partially printed on each side so that when viewed against a light source, the two sides can be viewed as a whole, complete image. On English banknotes, for example, the value of the note is partially printed on each side.

The alignment of the two sides has to be very accurate for this to work and that accuracy can only be achieved with very high quality processes which are difficult for counterfeiters to achieve.

In printing, this alignment of sides or colours is known as 'registration'.
