Personalized plates, also known as vanity plates, are license plates (motor vehicle registration tags) whose series of characters is chosen by the purchaser. The issuing authority sets guidelines into which the purchaser's selection must fall, like minimum and maximum length and permitted and prohibited characters and series of characters (you can't spell out any "bad" words), and, of course, the purchaser cannot get a series of characters that has already been issued. Many are available with a background that displays a particular interest, like a sport or hobby. They cost more than regular plates. Where I live (Texas, U.S.A.), they cost an additional US$40 per year.
