The roots of a plant grow downward in response to gravity. This is called positive gravitropism or positive geotropism. Roots grow toward the pull of gravity while shoots grow away from the force of gravity.
Certain plants react to gravity by growing against it or towards it. It is the tropism of gravity called a geotropism. Earth's gravity is the force that guides the direction of a sprouting seed's roots and shoots. (In scientific experiments where plants are put in zero-gravity environments, they grow in all directions.) Roots respond to the pull of gravity (which generates from the center of Earth) by growing toward it, and shoots, or stems, respond to gravity by growing away from it. Scientists do not completely understand how a plant's cells receive the signals that point different parts in different directions, but simple experiments show that no matter which way a seed is planted (with the root-producing part facing down or up), the roots will grow down and the shoots will grow up. Heavy starch grains found in certain cells help the growing plant keep its balance by shifting their place if the plant loses its upright position. This shifting directs growth hormones to affected areas in the plant. These hormones will cause new growth in stems and roots to correct their position in relation to gravity. In the shoot, for example, growth hormones will make cells toward the bottom grow faster than cells toward the top, pushing the shoot upward.
