Canon of Agreement: If two or more instances of the phenomenon under investigation have only one circumstance in common, that circumstance is the cause of the phenomenon.
Canon of Difference: If an instance in which the phenomenon under investigation occurs, and an instance in which it does not occur, have every circumstance in common except one, that one circumstance is the cause of the phenomenon.
Canon of Residues: Subtracts known causes from the phenomenon, leaving the residual phenomenon to be explained.
Canon of Concomitant Variations: When the variation of one phenomenon corresponds with that of another, they are causally connected.
Canon of Method of Agreement: Look for similar patterns in different situations to determine the cause of a phenomenon.
