Positive reinforcement is when you reward a behavior to encourage it.

Negative reinforcement is when you discourage an unwanted behavior.

It is NOT when you add or subtract a consequence from a situation.

hope this helped....

*Edit

I edit this as you are incorrect with Negative reinforcement StarGaizer42, Negative Reinforcement IS when you remove a stimulus or consequence to encourage good behavior. i.e. If you do this now(good thing), you wont have to do that later (bad thing)

Positive reinforcement is a process where a favorable stimulus is presented after a behavior is exhibited, increasing the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future. This technique aims to encourage desired behaviors by rewarding them with something pleasant or rewarding. It is commonly used in training and behavior modification to reinforce positive actions.

How are positive and negative reinforcement similar and how are they different?

Positive reinforcement involves adding a stimulus to increase the likelihood of a behavior recurring, while negative reinforcement involves removing a stimulus for the same purpose. Both are ways to increase the likelihood of a behavior, but positive reinforcement adds a stimulus while negative reinforcement takes one away.

What is the principle of positive Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement involves providing a reward or incentive following a desired behavior to increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated in the future. By associating the behavior with a positive outcome, individuals are motivated to continue engaging in the desired behavior. This principle is widely used in behavioral psychology to encourage learning and behavior change.

What is the difference between positive reinforcement negative reinforcement and punishment?

Positive reinforcement involves adding a pleasant stimulus to increase the likelihood of a behavior occurring again. Negative reinforcement involves removing an unpleasant stimulus to increase the likelihood of a behavior happening again. Punishment involves adding an unpleasant stimulus to decrease the likelihood of a behavior happening again.

What is a response contingent reinforcement?

Response contingent reinforcement is a type of reinforcement that is delivered only when a specific behavior occurs. In other words, the reinforcement is contingent upon the individual's response or behavior. This type of reinforcement helps to strengthen the desired behavior by providing a reward or consequence immediately after the behavior occurs.

What are the key elements in operant conditioning?

Key elements in operant conditioning include reinforcement (positive or negative) and punishment, shaping behavior through reinforcement schedules, and the concept of extinction when the learned behavior is no longer reinforced. Additionally, operant conditioning involves the principles of stimulus control, generalization, and discrimination.

How can negative reinforcement be positive?

Negative reinforcement refers to the removal of a negative stimulus to increase the likelihood of a desired behavior. In this context, "negative" does not refer to something bad but rather the removal of something unwanted. So, negative reinforcement can be positive because it encourages the individual to engage in a behavior that leads to the removal of an aversive stimulus, ultimately resulting in a positive outcome.

How are positive and negative reinforcement alike?

Positive and negative reinforcement both call attention to a situation. For many, negative attention is more desirable than no attention. Negative reinforcement is generally quicker than positive, yet the positive is so very important for development including self esteem.
