Rx drug abuse ( misuse) is when a person engages in any or all of the following behaviors: Uses a controlled substance for the high and not the pain; continues using the med even after the pain has subsided; uses it for pleasure or to decrease emotional pain; uses more than rx'd or more often; spends a large percentage of his/her time thinking of the drug, how to obtain more and the drug becomes more of the persons focus than other things; uses rxs not rx'd for that person or for a different reason than was rx'd originally. Goes to different drs or pharmacies to cover up continued use; cant go 6 mos without using that substance; constantly finds reasons to get more from the dr, new injuries, pain, accidents or makes up stories to get more; hoarding of multiple rxs of drug so they dont run out;goes on the internet or to acquaintances/family to get meds; frequent use of the ER to get more without the drs knowledge; trading rx meds with someone else for what the other wants;stealing from medicine cabinets or people they know.
