Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is most known for his policy of "appeasement" toward Adolf Hitler's Germany. It is thought that his appeasement policy was for Britain to be seen as being fair to German concerns and to keep Europe from going into war. It is also thought that Chamberlain thought war was inevitable and used the policy to gain time in order to build up Britain's military position.

Chamberlain also declared war on Germany in 1939 after Germany attacked Poland. Britain and France had previously agreed to protect Poland.
Chamberlain was also known for his efforts towards improving the lives of workers. He supported the Holiday Pay Act which gave workers one week off with pay and the Factories Act of 1937 which limited the number of hours women and children worked.

He is known for giving Adolf Hitler almost everything Hitler wanted and finally having to declare war when Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. He is best known for trying to appease a dictator and looking like a weak, simple minded fool for doing so. The phrase "Peace is our time" is what he said after giving away Czechoslovakia to the Nazis and it did not bring peace to anyone.

Neville Chamberlain was the Conservative Prime Minister from May 1937 to May 1940. Chamberlain threatened to resign unless the Labour Party was willing to join his Government. Labour decided not to serve under Chamberlain (though willing to serve under someone else) and so Chamberlain went on to Buckingham Palace to resign and he advised the King to send for Churchill. And so Churchill became Prime Minister and has been known as a British icon and Leader during the Second World war. Hope that somewhat helped!
