Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, which contains about 7% water is used by large cosmetic companies. Commercial perfumes and colognes also may contain preservatives, UV inhibitors, colorants, and other ingredients.
Cologne and perfume are both fragrances. But cologne is not perfume. The difference is the dilution. The strongest is "perfume extract." It is what they make all the other kinds of fragrance out of. It's approximately 20 percent aromatic compounds like essential oils, the rest is alcohol. This comes in a 55-gallon drum so you probably don't want any. Cut it 1 part perfume extract to 1 part alcohol (or "1:1"), you get eau de parfum. Cutting eau de parfum 1:1 with alcohol gets you women's eau de toilette or men's cologne. Cutting that 1:1 with alcohol gets you women's eau de cologne. And cutting that 1:1 with alcohol gets you women's splash or men's aftershave.
Hey you smell nice I don't make a lot of scents but if I did they'd smell like you.
Fragrance is cheaper, is in a plastic bottle, and is like a body spray. It can even just be the way something smells, like if your mom made a pie and the fragrance could be apple if it's an apple pie. A perfume is more expensive and stronger smelling than being sweet like fragrance.
Eau de cologne, usually used by men, was invented by an Italian barber in the beginning of the eighteenth century in the German city of Kรถln. Hence the name cologne, the French name for the city. There are colognes for women too. The difference is all in the dilution. (Well...and the scent. Men wouldn't wear Chanel No. 5 or Shalimar, and women don't want to smell like English Leather.) The very strongest fragrance product is perfume oil. It's not usually sold to consumers because it's too strong to wear. The strongest grade you'll find in a perfume store is Eau de Parfum, or "perfume." Next is Eau de Toilette, or "toilet water." Both of those are made only in scents for women. Then comes Eau de Cologne, or "cologne." This is made for both men and women, in different scents. And finally come "splashes" and "aftershaves." These are very faint scents.
