In a censer (thurible) is placed sand, or sometimes a removable pan. Then the thurifer lights charcoal either bricks or disks and places them in the base of the vessel. When the coal is hot and ready the thurifer raises the lid of the censer, and the priest scoops resin or powder incense onto the coals the lid is lowered and the smoke will rise out of the holes. The priest carries or swings the censer do spread the fragrant smoke.
