Head-tilt, Chin Lift. The head is tilted backwards and the jaw is pulled forward. If the patient is immobilized on a spinal board only the jaw can be pulled forward in most cases. This is known as a Jaw thrust maneuver.

Doing these two things helps to close the esophagus and open the airway into the lungs.
