Rectovaginal fistula is a condition where the vagina and the rectum communicate by means of an abnormal hole between them.

It is can be caused during childbirth or be due to physical injury or infection such as an abscess.

It is a very distressing condition and should be treated immediately.

A rectovaginal fistula can cause faeces to find their way into the vagina and thus causing incontinence as the vagina cannot retain them. Secondary urinary infections frequently result as a consequence of faeces being present round the urethral opening.

It can be repaired surgically once any infection has been treated with antibiotics.
