It depends on which type of music director you are referring to. There are many types. To teach within the public school system in the United States at the pre-K through high school levels, you must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a teacher education program from a regionally accredited college or university and state teacher certification. This would take approximately four years to complete as a full-time student, provided you take the program as prescribed by the college or university. Individuals who already have at least a bachelor's degree but not in an education program, can obtain certification to teach specific courses through the Alternative Route Program within the state they wish to teach.

A Music Director does not require any kind of specific qualification. Understand his style of music and try to put the music which comes from inside. Most of the music producers (or directors) who are in top level today, does not even have a proper music degree from college. Some have Inborn gift(talented)--some try to develop their talent. Don't worry about the backing music-the orchestra guy will be doing it according to your music. It would be great if you can get some knowledge on Scales, Rhythm, pitch etc..Coz it would help you in communicating with other musicians in the studio and make the work easier.(Also it might help you to produce a different variety of music, which you yourself have not got till that)
Keep practicing: Keep Producing music: Listen to you inner rhythm and melody of life..Happy, sad, thrilling..soothing.. Good Luck
