If your hydrangea flowers were pink in color what could you add to make the flower blue?

Go to the following web site. I think it will contain all the information you are looking for. http:/www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/colorchange.html

In the pea plants the presence of an allele for purple flowers will mask presence of an allele for white flowers. What does that mean?

Gene responsible for purple color is dominant over white color.

When the soil pH is above 7.0 certain plants produce blue flowers. When the soil pH is below 7.0 however pink flowers are produced. What explains the color change?

The acid in the soil, this is only true with some flowers.-Purplicous: check out my bio page!!! Flower color change dependent on soil pH is true for only certain flowers. Hydrangea macrophylla is the most common plant that responds to soil pH by altering flower color. The color is dependent on the amount of available aluminum in the soil - more acidic soils (lower pH) allow the aluminum to be more accessible; more alkaline soils (higher pH) tie up the aluminum and it becomes less available. And the coloring is the reverse of that stated in the question! Lower pH generates BLUE flowers -- higher pH generates PINK flowers. Aluminum sulfate, aka "hydrangea bluing", is often used to acidify the soil and increase the aluminum availability to maintain blue hydrangea flowers. The effect is not immediate and be careful not to overapply - aluminum in excess can be toxic to many plants.

What is more important to a women the smell of the smell of the flowers the color of the flowers or the number of flowers?

It depends on where the flowers are being delivered to. If at work, then it is the amount and the type (to show off to the coworkers). If it is at home, then it's the color and the smell.

Do pennies placed in the soil next to hydrangea plants effect the color?

Not that I've heard. Many hydrangea strains will have different flower colors, depending on the aluminum content of the soil. When there is available aluminum, the flowers will be blue. When there is no available aluminum, they'll be pink. This doesn't work for white hydrangeas. You can add aluminum sulfate, which is available at most garden centers, to turn pink flowers blue. In order to turn blue flowers pink, raise the soil pH by adding a liming material, and the aluminum will form insoluble compounds and no longer be available to the plants.

Can you plant Hydrangea macrophylla in the fall in Colorado?

For a Hydrangea Macrophylla, it is best to plant in early summer or fall. You will want an area with moist well-drained soil, with morning sun and afternoon shade. The further north one lives the more sun hydrangeas need and can withstand (think 3 hours minimum) in Colorado and if well taken care of, they will thrive. Remember, the pH level of your soil will change the color of your flowers.

How is flower color variation in hydrangea related to pH of the soil?

Forget ph. Take iron nails, copper and zinc or aluminum and place it on 3 sides of the plant near the outside drip line. You will get three different colored blooms on one plant. The National Arboretum suggests that you can vary the pH to change the availability of aluminum in the soil.Flower color in H. macrophylla is dependent on cultivar and aluminum availability. Aluminum is necessary to produce the blue pigment for which bigleaf hydrangea is noted. Most garden soils have adequate aluminum, but the aluminum will not be available to the plant if the soil pH is high. For most bigleaf hydrangea cultivars, blue flowers will be produced in acidic soil (pH 5.5 and lower), whereas neutral to alkaline soils (pH 6.5 and higher) will usually produce pink flowers. Between pH 5.5 and pH 6.5, the flowers will be purple (see image at left) or a mixture of blue and pink flowers will be found on the same plant.
