The average voltage and current of an a.c. system is zero, so it begs one to determine an appropriate measure of these units in a real system. The voltage and current of an a.c. system are measured in rms, because the rms values of these units will deliver an equal electrical power to that of a direct current (d.c.) system operating at the same amplitudes of voltage and current.
Mathematically, an rms value for a continuous function f(t) defined over an interval of time, T(1) and T(2), is defined by
f(rms) = square-root[1 / (T(2) - T(2)) x integral[f(t)]^2(dt) over the interval T(1) to T(2)].
