As Rome expanded the Latin people became citizens and little by little Latin became the ruling language, however it was mixed with the Greek and Roman, which has turned into modern Italian of today. This change took several hundred years. However even to this day it is referred to as the Roman language, which constitutes a higher ranking in the minds of people than Italian.
