Depends a bit on the speed and the traffic situation. The faster the other vehicle is going the bigger tha gap should be. From the cyclist's perspective - the bigger the better. If you can manage 3-4 feet that's OK, as it gives the rider some wobble room. less than 2 is inadvisable unless speed is down to a crawl.

i think it's supposed to be 6FT or something,any it's just a rough estimate i think,they should leave u plenty of room,just incase anything happens,though if there behind u in traffic or what not,they do give u a fair bit of room,unlike one the other day,at lights,car behind was nearly touching the back wheel of bike! bad idea for car drivers!
