So if we are asked to find the maximum bending moment whether it is sagging or hogging we should consider the maximum value without considering the sign. Hogging refers to a ship's hull bending or sagging in a concave shape along its length, often in the middle portion of the vessel. This deformation can occur due to uneven distribution of weight or cargo on board, causing the hull to flex downward in the center. Hogging can potentially weaken the structure of the ship and lead to structural failure if not addressed.
Sagging bending moment causes the beam to bend in a way to make concavity downward (cup-shaped) and it results in developing tensile stress in lower half of the beam x-section.
