France has one of the best School systems in the world, with one of the most advanced curriculums. The number of years are the same as the American system, however, for example the children start algebra and geometry a lot sooner than in the American system.
Classes are typically from Monday to Friday, from around 8 a.m. to 2:30-3:00pm for the lower classes, and Middle School up to High School typically is from 8:00am to about 4:30 p.m. as more classes are introduced into the curriculum.

Before last 3 years of the system, i.e. Seconde, Premiere, Terminale, the student must choose a 'specialization' which in most schools is primarily 3 distinct categories: Sciences (BAC S), Economics (BAC ES), Litterature (BAC L)
Some schools in France have a wider variety of available specializations which branch off one of the three main subjects above.
The classes and intensity of certain subjects depend on which path the student chooses, and chooses a specialty within the branch. For example, I myself have a BAC S - Spe-Bio (Which means, scientific Baccalaureat with Speciality in Biology).
