After Siddhartha attained enlightenment, he stayed sitting under the tree for 49 days and nights until he was able to start teaching what he had found. Initially he could not see the way to teach. According to legend, the only reason he did agree to teach is that the gods Brahma and Indra got tired of waiting for him and made a respectful request that he get started.

49 days is also said by Tibetans to be the maximum length of time that a being can stay in the bardo, the intermediate state between death and the next birth. Therefore Buddha's 49 days beneath the tree can be interpreted as a transition between his old self, the seeker, and his new self, the teacher. Personally I would like to think he was giving himself a break.
