The U.S. Civil War ended in 1865. By January 1865, both houses of Congress had passed the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. The amendment was ratified by the end of the year. In response, Southern states began passing discriminatory laws known as "Black Codes". These laws significantly limited the freedoms of black citizens, both those who were free and those who were enslaved before the 13th Amendment took affect. These laws were the predecessors to "Jim Crow" laws passed at the end of Reconstruction, beginning in 1876.
