To speed up processing, jobs with similar needs were batched together and were run through the computer as a group. Thus, the programmers would leave their programs with the operator. The operator would sort programs into batches with similar requirements and, as the computer, became available, would run each batch. The output from each job would be sent back to the appropriate programmer

A batch system is a when a computer is programmed to batch together a number of transactions for processing at a specific time. For example a bank may run batch jobs to update all payments into customer accounts at midnight, 3am and 5am. Equally they could do the same for payments going out.

In fact a lot of banks actually do this and it explains why you spend money on your account but it is not reflected at the hole in the wall/cash machine statement instantly.

The main idea behind this is to save processing time and resource so these are available for more urgent transactions that need to be processed quicker.
