They can be either. Most snakes are nonvenomous and make good pets, except large constrictors, which have been known to kill humans. About a quarter of snake species are venomous, though some are only mildly so. A few species though have venom so powerful that a bite is guaranteed to kill you if you do not get proper treatment.
Venemous snakes are born with venom, and if you are bitten by one, even if it has just hatched, can be deadly depending on the species. Non-venemous snakes have no venom, and therefore are relatively harmless.

Garden Snakes and Corn Snakes
No and no. They are harmless and great beginner snakes.
No. They are completely harmless.
Nope, harmless
no
It depends. Color alone does not identify a species. Some gray snakes, such as the great plains rat snake, are harmless while others such as rattlesnakes, can be deadly. The same goes for black snakes. If you see a snake and cannot identify the species it is best to steer clear in case it is venomous.
When some harmless snakes feel threatened they will try to scare off what ever is scaring them. For example, the ringneck snake is totally harmless, but when threatened it will first show off its bright belly, and then bite savagely.
