Rhea have a special gland in their bodies which allows them to become slightly lighter. It works in the same way things float, if an objects volume increases, but it's mass stays constant then the object will become more buoyant in the matter it resides in; e.g. a balloon deflated would sink, blow it up and it floats. The Rhea can replicate this on a very small scale, but in their past evolution may have been able to use this to help with their running, as they have very powerful legs and have evolved to not need to run as fast due to their main predator becoming extinct.
