There is an extra layer on the outside of the coconut. The thick layer of coconut fibre (as seen in coconut matting) is hidden inside a solid, (and waterproof) final layer. This enables the seed to float across the ocean for months or years without spoiling the seed inside. This has enabled the coco de mer to colonise almost every island in the Pacific.
The other thing, special to some people, is that the shape is remarkably suggestive of a pair of naked female buttocks.
