Edward Hammond Hargraves was born at Gosport, Hampshire, England on 7 October 1816. As a young man, Hargraves tried a variety of work, such as farming, shipping agent and sailor. He joined the Californian gold rush first, hoping to find gold, but never struck it rich. However, the experience taught him much about gold country, and he went to Australia to try his luck there. Using his knowledge of gold-bearing country, he enlisted the help of John Lister, who was able to lead him directly to where he found gold at Summerhill Creek (now named Ophir) near Bathurst in New South Wales.
