Our galaxy is called the Milky Way because people on Earth see it as a milky band in the night sky. Also, in Greek Mythology, the Milky Way was created by milk spilled when Hera, the wife of Zeus, was feeding Hercules.

The Milky Way Galaxy is fifteen-twenty billion years old. The mass of the Milky Way Galaxy is about 750 billion to 1 trillion solar masses. (One solar mass is equal to the mass of the Sun which is 2 x 1027.) The diameter of the Milky Way Galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years. At the center of the concave, spiral-shaped galaxy, there is an ominous black hole.

Any stars that you can see in the night sky without a telescope are a part of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way Galaxy is estimated to have between 100 and 400 billion stars. The solar systems, mainly the stars, orbit the Milky Way Galaxy. The oldest stars in the Milky Way lie near the center of the galaxy and in a halo, which consists of globular clusters and lone ancient stars.The Galaxy is believed to have six logarithmic arms. They are named as Perseus Arm, the Scutum-Crux Arm, the Carina arm, the Sagittarius arm, the Norma arm, and Cygnus Arm. Along the spiral arms, away from the galactic center, interstellar clouds collapse because of gravity into tight fists of gas and dust that become clusters of new stars.

The Milky Way Galaxy is the second largest galaxy in a group classified as the "Local Group". Our galaxy is heading towards another galaxy, which is the Andromeda Galaxy. This means that we are on a high collision course and are racing at a speed of about 100 miles per second. A crash will happen in the next 2 to 4 billion years.
