If facing the bow, the front of the boat or ship, the starboard is referred to the right side of the craft. An easy way to remember is that port and left have the same number of letters, so right must be starboard.

"Starboard" is a nautical term meaning "to the right side of the vessel".

On a ship, facing toward the front of the ship, starboard means "right". The right side of the ship, and that general direction.
The starboard side of a ship or aircraft is the right side when facing the bow or nose.
The right side of the ship as you face the bow or front of the ship.

Port and starboard are descriptive way to describe locations on a boat. For r the same retcons that compasses aren't marked front, back, left and right ships have direction unique to themselves. Fore is at the front and aft (from the dutch "abaft" meaning following) are easy no determine but starboard (right side of the boat when you face the front or prow) and port, the left, are a bit more mysterious. For the origin of these terms you have to go back to time when boats rudders were on the side, not the aft end. This side was known as the steering side or rudder side which eventually became "starboard". As the rudder was on the right the boats would moor with the side of the boat without the rudder towards the dock to prevent damage to the steering system. This side faced the port. It became the port side.
