Morphine given intracerebroventricularly in mice produces a severe spasm of the anal sphincter(sacrococcygeus muscle) resulting in erection of the tail.This is mediated via activaion of supraspinal mu-opioid receptors and is inhibited by supraspinal kappa-opioid receptors. This test was formerly employed to detect morphine in biological fluids but many other compounds including methadone evoke a similar response.
