java.lang.String is a final class that is used to declare String constant values.

For ex: String name = new String("Rocky"); or

String name = "Rocky";

would create a String object of name "name" and value as "Rocky"

This can be used in our class for processing.

A string can hold any alphabets, special characters, number etc. It is immutable and cannot be modified. It by default overrides the Object.equals() property which can be used to check for equality among objects.

Since Strings are immutable, modifying them takes time. So it is generally advisable to use StringBuffer when you want to use Strings that need to be modified more than once.

Since the question is in the Java category: in Java, the method is called toString(). This method will automatically be invoked if you implicitly convert an object to String type, for example: "The answer is: " + myObject In this example, the String concatenation (the plus sign) forces the object, myObject, to type String - to do this, the object's toString() method will be called.
