Costals are just the ribs, so subcostal would indicate an incision just below the bottom rib.
The type of surgical incision depends upon what surgery is being carried out. In more recent times a lot of the procedures are being carried out laparoscopically and as such do not require large incisions. Incisions therefore in simple terms can be longitudinal, transverse, oblique or curved.
Subcostal recession signals respiratory distress that causes increased in drawing of the chest. The condition causes negative intrathoracic pressures to occur at the chest wall just below the ribs.

Subcostal means below the ribs.
A vertical incision is called a transverse or Pfannenstiel incision depending upon the procedure.
Most of the time the incision will be located inside the nose and will not be visible. The size of the incision is small.
posterior relation:-lateral and medial arcuate ligament ,nerves-subcostal,ilioinguinal,iliohypogastric, diaphragm, psoas major,quadratus lomborum,transversus abdominis, ribs, subcostal vessels, only diff is that on the rt we only12th rib but on the lt we have 11th as well.

Supra means abonve and clavicle is collar bone. Supraclavicle incision is an incision above the collar bone.
