an acid donates a proton to a neighboring atom. (adds Hydrogen to water for example>) this in turn lowers the pH which is the amount of hydrogen in a substance. so, sulfuric acid is H2SO4 the H2 means there are 2 hydrogen atoms, and the SO4 means Sulfur atom and 4 oxygen atoms, this is what will be left when the 2 hydrogen atoms leave it, usually only one does so you are USUALLY left with a Hydrogen sulfur and 4 oxygens. since it is missing the hydrogen you are left with a negative charge on the molecule (H SO4), this can be used in many many reactions, and it is used for so many things you may just want to Google uses of sulfuric acid.
