Circumcision is a process by which the foreskin is removed from the penis. This is carried out for religious reasons by many faiths, most famously Jews and Muslims, or for medical reasons. In the former case, this usually takes place a set time after birth (eight days in Judaism or later in the case of converts) and in the latter at any time it is deemed necessary.

In Judaism, it is usually carried out by a highly-trained professional who may also be a rabbi known as a mohel. Circumcision in males has been shown to offer some benefits, such as making it easier for the penis to be kept clean, and does not decrease sensitivity.

Female circumcision, however, is a very different matter that involves the mutilation of the vulva and, in many cases, the removal of the clitoris. It is used by some societies to prevent women taking any physical pleasure during intercourse and has been banned in many nations as a cruel and barbaric practice.
