When the muzzle of a gun is close to someone, and the gun is fired, bits of gunpowder stick in the skin, and color the skin like a tattoo. This is used in crime investigations to determine how far a gun was from a person when they were shot.

When a gun is fired at VERY close range, grains of unburned gunpowder are driven into the skin. Used by investigators to determine the distance at which someone was shot.
