Essentially a thermometer -- tells the temperature of the engine. Overheating
can ruin you engine, not to mention boil off all your antifreeze.
Fortunately, if you shut the engine down soon after if gets too hot, no harm is done.
Boiling off the antifreeze cools the engine, so you are not likely to damage it until
your radiator boils dry. Obviously, overheating is caused by failure of the cooling system-
usually a radiator leak or failure of the water pump.
Some cars have a gauge that tells the temperature-- others have only an "idiot light"-
something that turns red if the temperature is dangerously high.

An automobile temperature gauge can fluctuate when the thermostat is opening and closing erratically. The temperature gauge can also fluctuate when the ground wire is loose.
It is possible that the temperature gauge has stopped working in a 1992 Tempo due to a blown fuse. It is also possible that the temperature gauge stopped working do to the temperature sensor in the engine having a short.
The temperature gauge on a car fluctuates because the car's thermostat is opening and closing. The gauge goes up when the thermostat closes and the gauge goes down when the thermostat opens.
It will usually run with a gauge temperature of around 200-210 degrees.
