A reproductive cell, or gamete, is a special type of cell used specifically for reproduction. Male gametes are called sperm and female gametes are eggs. Gametes, unlike somatic cells, contain only one set of genetic information. This set of genetic information will contain traits from both the male parent and the female parent because of a process named crossing over, which is a step in meiosis, the formation of new sex cells.
Male gametes and female gametes are different in shape and function. The male gamete, or sperm, is in the shape of a snake with a large head and is very small. The head contains all the genetic information and also acrosomes which are used to drill into the egg. The middle part of sperm contains a lot of mitochondria to help the cell move. The egg is more stationary on the other hand is is round and big. It stays within the woman's reproductive system and awaits the sperm.
