There are three ways. 1 A dealer can normally tell from the vin number. 2 There are normally tags or labels on the axle that have part number, gear ratio, and fluid requirement info. 3 You can count how many times you have to turn the driveshft to get one complete turn of the tires.
A good majority of the 1984 Ford F150 gear ratio had 3.00 gears for the stock. In addition, the spline should be a 31.

I am not positive about this but, I believe that this indicates that the axle has a 3.00:1 gear ratio. Check with you local Ford dealer for a definitive answer.
Trouble code P0733 means: Incorrect gear ratio, third gear Trouble code P0734 means: Incorrect gear ratio, fourth gear
Supply the vehicle identification number to the nearest dealer and he/she can tell you what ratio you have.
You can call a GM. dealer and ask for parts. Then ask the parts man if you give him the VIN# will you tell me the gear ratio. And he will.
