The Bible does address alcohol.

The foremost instruction for a follower of Christ would be to simply not do it, but rather be filled with the Holy Spirit of God in Christ...
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

A further instruction for the true believer and follower of Christ, for understanding in a better way to live...
Luke 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
1 Peter 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
1 Peter 4:4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

If one is in a bitter environment, or is having overwhelming trouble with their faith...
1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

Some wisdom from the biblical book of Proverbs. I believe this can apply to those in great pain due to being overcome by ailments and disease (due to a lack of the faith it takes as to receive a divine healing, and/or due to very old age) ...concerning even and especially pain medications prescribed by physicians...this would describe mercy, to my understanding...
Proverbs 31:6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
