A:In the Book of Isaiah, chapters 1-39 are considered by scholars to be substantially the work of Isaiah, son of Amoz, writing during the reigns of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekaih, kings of Judah. Chapters 40-55 are attributed to an anonymous author, now known as Second Isaiah, or II Isaiah, writing over a hundred years later during the Babylonian Exile.

Chapter 39 simply tells of gifts sent by the king of Babylon to Hezekiah, to wish him well in his recovery from a recent illness. A late addition at the end of the chapter has Isaiah say that Babylon will one day conquer Jerusalem and take away those treasures and the sons of the kings. This passage then has the king say that the Lord had promised peace in the time of Hezekiah. We then move on to Second Isaiah and the story of the Exile.

A:

Isaiah chapters 1-39, with some additions and alterations, are the work of Isaiah, son of Amoz, after whom the entire book is named. Chapters 40-55 are the work of an unknown author now known as II Isaiah, or Second Isaiah, who wrote during the Babylonian Exile. Chapters 56-66 were written by another unknown author now known as III Isaiah, or Third Isaiah, who wrote shortly after the Babylonian Exile.
