The Broederbond is a sinister and secretive Afrikaaner society, based on what appear to be neo-Nazi principles.
Afrikaner Broederbond was created in 1918.
Apartheid started in 1948 and was thought up by the stalwarts of the National Party and the Broederbond.
The cause was the despicable actions of the Broederbond and the Nats - the South African Nationalist Party. They managed to get it adopted in the 1948 election although many people of all races objected.
Afrikaner nationalism could be described as a kind of civil religion that combined the history of the Afrikaners, their language and the Afrikaner Calvinism as key symbols.Their ideology was the secret Broederbond organization and the National Party.
The Apartheid policy was supported by various Afrikaans newspapers and Afrikaner 'cultural movements' such as the Afrikaner Broederbond and Ossewabrandwag. It proved popular amongst the Afrikaner community, especially the Boers, or farmers, of the Zuid Afrikaansche Repulick (ZAR - South African Republic or Transvaal) and Orange Free State.
Apartheid was devised by the Afrikaaner dominated Nationalist Party and the Broederbond, an extreme right wing Afrikaaner secret society. The start of Apartheid legislation was the Population Registration Act of 1950. This act created four distinct racial groups - white, black, coloured and Indian. White was separated into Afrikaans and English. Black was separated into ten similar groups. The Group Area Act, introduced later in 1950 deciced where people lived according to their racial description. There were further Acts involving employment, education, sexual relations, marriage and other things but that is a much longer story in this sordid affair.

Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. Following this was the crucial end to the Apartheid laws.
