The first mention of child labor by the Church was during the Industrial Revolution. In 1891, Pope Leo XIII wrote the encyclical letter "Rerum Novarum" which addressed many of the problems arising from the new relationships between business owners and their workers. On child labor, (which wasn't the main thrust of the document) there was only one small remark: …in regard to children, great care should be taken not to place them in workshops and factories until their bodies and minds are sufficiently developed. For, just as very rough weather destroys the buds of spring, so does too early an experience of life's hard toil blight the young promise of a child's faculties, and render any true education impossible. - Rerum Novarum, § 42 Much has been written since then.
