Roman Catholic AnswerThe happiness of heaven is not happiness so much as joy, unspeakable, unknowable (on this earth), absolute, perfect, limitless joy. Heaven is not a place we go to after we die, it is a state of existence, it is a state of existence in which we know God, Himself, as He Is without mediation. It is so far beyond our understanding that we cannot conceive of it. We can get an inkling of what hell is like, but only the saints in the transforming union (which should be all of us before we die) have an inkling of heaven. The thing is, it is not so much a radical change of how we are here on earth, as the fulfillment of what we have already started to become. If we are doing God's Will, and IT has become the be-all and the end-all of our life, then heaven will just be the fulfillment. If we are miserable here on earth, short-tempered, irritable, etc. then we are already starting to live in hell. All death does is fix that state eternally and remove all possible distractions. In Heaven, we possess the joy of our life eternally without dilution; in hell we possess misery eternally without hope: we are busy building our heaven or hell right here on earth with each moment that passes.

Will Beowulf go to heaven?

Beowulf is an imaginary character. If he were real, from a Christian point of view it is very hard to say. People's views on heaven vary. You might get a different answer from a Catholic than from a fundamentalist.

How would the Roman Catholic Church view a marriage between a practicing Catholic and a Mormon?

Marriage between a Catholic and non Catholic will be challenging. How challenging will depend of the beliefs of the non Catholic. Catholics MUST be married in the Catholic Church and MUST raise their children as Catholics. This can meet with resistence from the non Catholic partner. This obligation is NOT open for negotiation. =The love for GOD and His Church is priority. Nothing is more important than our Catholic faith and our love for God. If the non Catholic agrees to the terms set forth by the Church, then a marriage can take place. If not, then the Catholic must NOT marry this person. ==We are called to live our lives in a way that will lead us to heaven. If the love for another person causes us to renounce our Catholic faith, then we are choosing a human person over GOD. This cannot be! It is very painful, but we must remember that earth is temporary. Heaven is FOREVER! ==I am not saying that non Catholics are less loved or will not go to heaven. I am saying that Catholics believe the Catholic Church holds the FULLNESS of truth revealed. If one who KNOWS the Catholic Church is TRUE and denounces HER for any reason, they risk losing heaven. ==We are NOT promised total happiness here on earth. BUT, we are promised TOTAL happiness in heaven. ==The question was specific to the Mormon Church. They are very loving people but their beliefs are so contrary to the Catholic Church, that marriage would be extremely difficult. It is very unlikely that the Mormon would agree to allow the children to be raised as Catholics.=

Where do you go when you die non-Catholic?

A:The Catholic view is that anyone can go to heaven if they die perfect, believing in Jesus and repenting of their sins. On this view, non-Catholics have a much harder time of it, as they are without the sacraments, particularly the sacrament of penance, wherein their sins are forgiven, and the sacrament of the Eucharist, wherein Our Blessed Lord gives them the grace and strength through His Own Body, to make our way through this life. The Catholic view would seem to rue out any possibility of non-Christians, especially atheists and agnostics of entering heaven. However, Cardinal Pell, one of the most senior figures in the Catholic Church, recently expressed the view that even atheists will go to heaven if they have led good lives. Since atheists neither believe in Jesus nor seek forgiveness of their sins, this is a major change of direction if formally adopted by the Catholic Church. Of course, atheists have no expectation of going to either heaven or hell, as they believe they do not exist and therefore no one can ever go to heaven or hell.
