Deafness is the state of being completely unable to hear anything. Typically you are either born this way or the ear becomes so damaged that it no longer functions. (Cochlear implants have improved over the last decade or so and are a controversial option to aiding those that are deaf.) Some people can become deaf in one ear and HOH in the other, but they aren't considered to be fully deaf as long as their other ear is still functioning. Hard of hearing (HOH) implies that there is some function to your hearing, but it is below the normal range. This typically occurs when you have damaged your ear drums due to either the normal effects of aging or being in a loud environment for too long (i.e. loud music, construction, ammunition ranges, etc. <<< These can all cause you to become HOH.)
