Pure democracies, where every person has equal say in absolutely every decision, would have to be extremely small. Groups larger than 20 or 30 would begin having trouble getting everyone's vote on absolutely every issue.

In a representative government like the US, with a population of well over 300,000,000, one problem is the necessary debate and deliberation that must go on at various governmental levels. The founders intentionally put mechanisms in place that would prevent changes from being made swiftly. But they had no concept that we would become as large and in some ways cumbersome as we are.

Another problem is assuring that individuals and groups are able to get their voices and opinions aired sufficiently for public debate.

Also, we are large enough that Big Business and Big Money can often buy offices for selected candidates, whether we believe it or not. Big business now has, thanks to our Supreme Court, the right to spend limitless money on political issues during campaigns, so they will for all purposes be able to freely buy whatever office they desire for some chosen candidate.

Yes, there are elections, but the electorate is mesmerized and hypnotized by the media that Big Money will readily and happily flood with their chosen political content. The unfortunate result will be that the US will become The United Big Businesses of America, well disguised by the false appearance that the people have freely chosen.
