The fine sleeper is an English equivalent of 'De Schone slaper'. The phrase in Dutch and in English became almost a household word in the 1960s. It was linked with a bit of Olympic Games history.

Siegfried Willem [Wim] Esajas [April 16, 1935-April 30, 2005] was Suriname's first Olympian athlete. He was scheduled to compete in the 800 meter race at the Rome Olympics in 1960 but missed the event, allegedly because he overslept. He was given the nickname 'De Schone slaper' ['The Fine Sleeper'], and Suriname became the laughing stock of the international sports world.

Two weeks before his death, Suriname's Olympic Committee presented Wim Esajas with a plaque honoring him as Suriname's first Olympian and with a letter of apology. The truth was that Fred Glans, Secretary General of Suriname's Olympic Committee in 1960, had mistakenly informed Wim that his morning qualifying race had been rescheduled for the afternoon.
