In conjunction with the other meningeal membranes, pia mater functions to cover and protect the central nervous system (CNS), to protect the blood vessels and enclose the venous sinuses near the CNS, to contain the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and to form partitions with the skull. Additionally, it produces some CSF and helps circulation of it. It has been found to have a role as being the brain's "lymphatic system". It helps produce the Blood brain barrier. And pia mater has a huge role in spinal chord deformation under compression.

The meninges, i.e. the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
The leptomeninges include the pia mater and and arachnoid, both of which are thin and delicate in structure, as opposed to the dura mater.
Spiderweb-like (hence the name) arachnoid layer is one of the three meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It is interposed between the two other meninges, the more superficial dura mater and the deeper pia mater, and is separated from the pia mater by the subarachnoid space.Arachnoid mater

the pia mater meninx (plural meninges)
The dura mater or dura, is the outermost of the three layers of the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The other two meningeal layers are the pia mater and the arachnoid mater.

arachnoid mater
Meninges (singular is meninx) is the collective term for the three membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The meninges are composed of the dura mater (outer), the arachnoid (middle), and the pia mater (inner). In common usage, the membranes are often referred to as simply the dura, pia, and arachnoid. The Pia Mater
pia and arachnoid
The pia mater. There are 3 layers of meninges: the pia mater adheres to the brain and spinal cord; the dura mater is next to the skull, and the arachnoid mater is in-between the two.
There are three layers of meninges around the brain and spinal cord (these are continuous between the two structures). The outermost layer is the Dura mater, the toughest and most protective layer. The middle is the arachnoid layer, and the pia mater is the innermost layer. The protective layers of the brain are the 3 meninges. From the outermost layer to the innermost layer, they are the dura mater, the arachnoid, and the pia mater.Dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater, skullThe protective membranes surrounding the brain are called the meninges, and from outside to in are named the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and the pia mater.meninges
