Based on my experience and conversations with other it varies widely. As low as 8 mpg in town for a poorly maintained engine. For a well maintained and highway optimized engine and carburetor 22 mpg is not unheard of. I had a 1972 convertible that the regularly got 18 mpg highway.

1972 pickups where not equipped to handled better gas mileage so of course there mileage is lower then the 2010. The newer trucks but more equipment in to handle better gas mileage with new technology.
I get about 30 miles to the gallon with my olds achieva.

I have a 97 olds aurora. It gets 19-23 mpg on a good day, but depending how you drive it can get as low as 16 mpg average.
