Right from the day the white man set his foot into Nigeria, that was when feminism started. Our culture and tradition were our pride but that was until the white man came. The white man's aggressive nature hardened the heart of our women and made them open to criticism of what I call tradition rather than feminism. The filiopietistic nature of the African men and women gave us roles that we hearkened seriously to. We understood the consequence of going against those roles. The white man defied our terms, our nature and our world. It coined words for us that are now beginning to bring about hatred amongst brothers and sisters.Ever wondered why an African would call every single man close to him his brother and a girl or woman her sister? May be yes, may be no, but my own definition of brother is different from the white man's. We did things together putting in mind that we were kins, it was not a world of only me, it was about words like us, we, our etc. They have drastically reduced us to nothing by introducing the word. If I did not know what feminism is, I probably won't use it. If the coinage was ours(Africans), it wouldn't have been derogatorily implied. The word carries hate in it. Wives are now fighting husband, sisters are fighting brothers, aunties are fighting uncles, but it will make us feel better if I said grandmothers haven't put up a fight with grandfathers yet. May be it is so because most of our gradparents dot not understand English. Let us not shy away from the truth. Face reality. Adie Joseph adinya +2348039378678

What is another word for feminism?

I don't believe that there is another word for feminism, the term feminist is clear on it's intentions: a movement to bring about gender equality. There are similar movements such as womanism which is a movement for equality for women of colour, as mainstream feminism is mostly white-centered many black women feel they need their own movement outside feminism to fight for their rights.

How did feminism end?

First wave feminism ended around 1920, because the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified, giving women the vote. First wave feminism had largely focused on getting the vote. Carrie Chapman Catt, one of the leaders of the Suffrage Movement (within first wave feminism), had in fact desired to make the suffrage movement so central to the first wave feminist movement, that she had bribed newspapers and used contacts in the press to get articles about other aspects of the women's movement removed, so that suffrage was the only issue focused on, in order to make it stronger. After suffrage was achieved, no other movements within first wave feminism really had any momentum, support, visibility, or resources, since so much had been thrown behind the Suffrage Movement, so first wave feminism ended, adn gave way to second wave feminism in the 1960s.

Yes, society still needs feminism because feminism is a movement that seeks to bring gender equality and society hasn't achieved this yet. Feminism seeks to deal with issues of gender inequality and other forms of oppression such as racism, until everyone is equal within society feminism will exist.
