Historical evolution of information systems:

The business applications of information systems have expanded significantly over the years.

1-1-From 1950s to 1960s "data processing":

Until the 1960s, the role of most information systems was simple: transaction processing, record keeping, accounting, and other electronic data processing (EDP) applications.

1-2-From 1990s to 1970s: "management reporting":

Another role added to the MIS; the processing of all this data into useful information reports, to help the manager in the decision making. So we can say that at this phase the concept of management information systems was born.

1-3-From 1970s to 1980s: "Decision support":

The previous information systems were effective in company activities organization. However, the manager during this stage needed a special suitable support factor to deal with different management facts. So the concept of Decision Support Systems (DSS) was born. The report which classified as a support must be interactive and informative.

1-4-From 1980s to 1990s: "Strategic and end user support":

During this phase a very important new phenomenon was appeared and it called "end user computing", and it came as result of many factors such as the rapid development of microcomputer processing power, application software packages, and telecommunication networks.

Then the managers needed a special new system to provide the corporate executives with some simple information which are opportune to the executives' level (executive information), so the concept of "executive information systems" was born. The role of this system is to provide top executives with the right way of finding the critical information when they want it.

Then a new role for information systems appeared, and it was very important relating to the strategic goals of the firm, it was to provide the managers with what we call it strategic information. So the concept of "strategic information systems (SIS)" was born. Information technology became an integral component of all managerial and economic activities of the company.

1-5-From 1990s to 2000s: "Electronic business and commerce":

The rapid growth of internet, Intranet, Extranet, and other interconnected global networks in the 1990s dramatically changed the capabilities of information systems in business at the beginning of the 21st century. Internet-based and Web-enabled enterprise and global "electronic business (E-business) and commerce systems" are becoming commonplace in the operations and management of today's business enterprises.
