Prasad is the food offered first to God and then distributed amongst devotees. It is believed that such food is Sattvik and hence emanate positive vibrations. Thus, those who eat prasad also receive this vibrations. To explain this, if you eat food at a restaurant, the chef may have cooked the food with business intentions ormaybe he had a bad day and he was angry when he cooked. Then such negative vibrations are passed on to the eater. Thus eating prasad is said to bring about positive vibrations.
It negates the negative energy out of the food. Once it's offered to god the food is instantly sanctified. So the offering of prashad helps one to purify his/her thoughts to understand better the connection between him/her and God.
In Sikhism, a prashad refers to the food that is first offered to a god or guru before being distributed to the devotees. It was used to get the blessing of the deity to whom it was offered.
