Unlike english, Japanese symbols all represent sounds, not single letters (except for A, I, E, O, U symbols). Took me a while to get my head around this concept. But the japanese hiragana (the simplest alphabet of japanese) is;

あ a い i え e お o う u

か ka き ki け ke こ ko く ku

さ sa し shi せ se そ so す su

た ta ち chi て te と to  つ tsu

(you may notice that the line above doesn't fit the patterns, but its still right)

な na に ni ね ne の no ぬ nu

は ha ひ hi へ he ほ ho ふ fu

ま ma み mi め me も mo む mu

わ wa や ya よ yo ゆ yu

There are also other sounds you can make by adding two strokes above each symbol in lines 'K', 'G', 'S', 'T' and 'H' The rules for the sounds are 'k' sounds goes to 'g'; 's' goes to 'z', 'h'; 'fu' go to 'b' and finally 't' goes to 'd'

Hope this makes sense.
